My Favorite Actress

Have I ever told you that I love Emma Thompson?  She came to mind recently as Krissy had started one of those..."What 5 movies would you take to a deserted island" games.  (Keeping in mind, that the island would have to have electricity, a DVD player and a TV.)

The more I thought about my favorite movie list, the more I thought about my two favorite...take your breath away movie moments.  Both moments were created by the remarkable and amazing Emma Thompson.

The first was in Sense and Sensibility.  It's near the end of the movie when Elinor finds out the Edward is not married to Lucy Steele.  That moment...with an intake of breath...she manages to express such emotion.  I am of course, breathless with her and in a puddle on the floor.

The second is in Love Actually. There is a scene, where she is opening a Christmas present from her husband.  She is thinking it is the gold necklace she accidently found in his coat pocket.  It is in fact...not.  The realization and heartbreak that she holds in, is astounding.  Again, she carries me with her and I am lost for her.

I do, of course realize there are many other brilliant actress today, but no one has moved me that way that Emma has.  So, I love Emma Thompson.

As for the 5 movies I picked for my deserted island...they are:

Casablanca
Pride and Prejudice
Love Actually
Princess Bride
Roman Holiday

If this list says anything about me at all, it is that I am a hopeless romantic!

  1. I remember very clearly the gold necklace scene from Love Actually. Do you mean the old Roman Holiday with Troy Donohue? That takes me right back to high school.

  2. Now I feel sad about Ryan being sad about going to school. Don't you hate for them to ever have to shed a tear?

  3. I hope Ryan feels happier today. :)
I LOVE Emma Thompson, she is one of my all-time favorites as well. I love your choice of movies.
    As you wish!

  4. Oh!! I love all of those movies!! How wonderful! I would have to add Now, Voyager to that list!! "Don't let's ask for the moon, we have the stars."

  5. Oh...Kelly, you are so right about Now Voyager. I can't believe I missed that one. I do love that movie. It just kills me. Yet again...another love story though. Since I can't drop any of the other 5, I would just HAVE to take 6.

Donna and Rosey, thank you for your kind comments about Ryan. He was fine soon after I left and told Caity he had fun at school. But, seeing his little face and having him not want to let go of me was so hard.

  6. I asked my husband the "5 movies on an island" question and he asked if I was there on the island with him. I couldn't figure out why that would make a difference. He explained that if he was there without me it would be a very different sort of list, if ya know what I mean. Ahhhhh....

I must go watch Now, Voyager. i haven't seen it in years.

  7. Though I know it's not Pee-wee's Big Adventure, I might have to return with my answer ... very thought provoking for this late hour ... but I do think Emma is great ... aw, Lust for Life a start!

  8. I also love Emma Thompson - and remember well the scene from Sense and Sensibility - it makes me tear-up every time. ALSO the scene with the CD (NOT necklace) from Love Actually. She's amazing. Your list is awesome. I would add: You've got Mail - I never get tired of it. And Miss Potter - it's just so pretty.

  9. Susan - I'm a big fan of You've to Mail. I don't know what it is about that movie, but I can watch it over and over. It almost made my list.

What is Miss Potter? I'm going to have to look that one up.

  10. We all love Princess Bride. Actually, just tonight, my husband's friend said he'd never seen and and WON'T just because I gasped when he told me this. I'm going to get him basket for x-mas complete with popcorn and the dvd.

My 11 year old was telling me that the other day, they were all wearing those "Hello my name is" name tags and had written in the blank space, "Ingo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die". Kids are so funny!

  11. Miss Potter is the movie about Beatrix Potter. I'm not a big Renee Z. fan, but she is great in this, and the settings are beautiful. It has a lovely peaceful vibe to it. Try it, I think you will like it :-)

  12. Wendy...I think your 11 year old daughter is brilliant. Wish I was even that clever now. That just cracked me up.

Susan...I looked up Miss Potter on IMDB after I saw your comment. Looks like a good one. I'm so-so on Renee, but I do love her in Bridget Jones (another movie I can watch over and over, but more for Colin Firth I think.)
